Mount St. Josephs

The Monastery of Mount St. Joseph

The Monastery of Mount St. Joseph was located on Monastery Road, on the land that is now Monastery Heath. The only remaining evidence of the monastery today is the small overgrown cemetery next to Monastery Road. The keys to the cemetery have been kindly given to Clondalkin Tidy Towns with the aim of restoring the site and including it on a historic walk of Clondalkin.

On Thursday 26th August 2010, Mayor Eamonn Maloney of South Dublin launched a new book by local man Joe Williams telling the history of the Monastery of Mount St, Joseph in Clondalkin. The launch took place in Clondalkin Library before a capacity attendance. Joe is a member of Clondalkin History Society and many members attended the launch.

At the launch, Joe revealed that the monks from Mount St. Joseph had donated the land for the Carnegie Library in which they were standing and which was opened in 1911.

The book tells the the growth of the Carmelite Third Order and of the many roles served by the Monastery over the years. It is illustrated with many images drarn from Joe's collection.

Priced at €5, the book is very good value and is available from all branches of South Dublin Libraries. If you are experiencing difficulty obtaining a copy, please contact Local Studies Section, County Library, Tallaght, phone 01 4620073 or e-mail (localstudies at sdublincoco.ie)
